Data Engineer – SLCC

The data engineer will work in Data Science and Analytics alongside a team of rockstar analysts, data visualizers, data scientists, and leaders to continue the development of the college’s data warehouse. 
  
The data engineer will develop, construct, test, and maintain analytical data architectures containing institutional data for Salt Lake Community College. The data engineer will be a key player in data warehouse architecture and development including identifying business needs, investigating, and relating disparate data sources, and creating efficient and performant data pipelines that process raw data into valuable data structures. This position will support our currently on-premises data architecture and be involved in our plans for moving to the cloud. The data engineer will proactively identify data quality issues and create quality assurance checks, reports, or apply transformations as needed. This position will also develop and support our machine learning operations (ML Ops) in developing processes for regular, timely runs of machine learning models. The data engineer may also develop reporting or models to communicate complex data relationships or transformations. 

 


 Our current technology stack is:
 Data Warehouse/Storage: Oracle 19c, GCP, AWS
 ETL: Wherescape, SQL, Python, Airflow (planned)
 Reporting: Cognos, Tableau, Oracle APEX
 Project Management: Jira

 

Responsabilities

  • Build and maintain robust data architectures for the data warehouse by taking input from business users and stewards to deliver easy-to-query and performant data structures. 
  • Build and maintain the data pipelines and integrations to ensure timely and accurate data availability, using industry best practices. 
  • Develop machine learning operations. These tasks should be completed with supervision and direction from senior members of the Data Science & Analytics team.
  • Ensure that accurate, trusted, quality assured datasets are loaded and processed efficiently into the data warehouse on a daily or real-time basis. 
  • Monitor these regular processes and troubleshoot issues that arise. Work to develop solutions to resolve issues proactively instead of simple band-aid fixes. With direction from Senior Analysts, the Assistant Director, and Data Warehouse, create and monitor data quality and availability tests for these datasets. 
  • Perform quality assurance checks on all data products and proactively work to identify and address gaps or inconsistencies across reports, dashboards, or warehouse pipelines with business subject matter experts, relying on automation whenever possible. 
  • Document developed data structures and models including example queries and use cases. 
    Other duties as assigned.

Preffered Cualifications 

  • Experience in a data warehouse and with data integration. 
  • Experience with cloud technologies.
  • Experience with higher education software such as Banner, Canvas, or Starfish.

Minimum Qualifications 

 

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, information systems, or quantitative field. 
  • Zero (0) to Three (3) years of experience working with data.
  • Experience writing SQL. 
  • Proficiency with database modeling.

    Understanding of:
         • Data structures and relational databases
         • Data schemas and metadata for analytics 
         • Troubleshooting methods
         • Loading and transforming data methods
         • Business processes and how they impact data collection and data quality 
         • Data quality checks to ensure accurate data
         • Understanding of machine learning operations (ML Ops)

    Experience:
         • Using SQL and Python to create reproducible, automated processes to create data infrastructure and products for business users. 
         • Using cloud technologies including docker containers and airflow.
         • Working with business users to define and develop automated quality assurance error checks.

    Communication and Teamwork:
         • Strong organizational skills. Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet project or reporting deadlines. 
         • Excellent oral and written communication skills. 
         • Collegial and professional interpersonal skills. 
         • Ability to communicate effectively with a broad range of diverse people, ability, culture, and ethnic background, to maintain good working relationships across the College.
